Features To Look For In A Custom Wood Dining Table

Wood tables come in so many different shapes, sizes, and colors. You can even have a dining room table custom-made for your home. If you do decide to go the custom route, it's important to ensure the table has the right features to suit your needs. Here are some features to strongly consider.

Waterproof or Water-Resistant Finish

You've probably seen dining room tables that have been damaged by water exposure. Sometimes these tables develop white rings or discolored spots. If you're having a table custom-made, though, you can ask to have it finished with a waterproof or water-resistant product. There are hard wax finish products that will seal the wood, protect the table, and resist discoloration over the years. The good news is that these products also tend to be low-VOC and eco-friendly.

Matched Color

Do you have baseboards or other wood furniture in your dining room? If so, you might want to have your dining room table color-matched to the furniture or other woodwork. Your table maker may be able to mix the finish next to your existing woodwork, adjusting the color blend until they get a perfect match. Or, they can use software to scan the color of your existing furniture and color-match it. The resulting dining room table will look like it was made just for your dining room — because it was!

Appropriate Height

If you already have certain chairs in mind, make sure you let your table maker measure them. Or, send your table maker the width and height of the chairs so they can design the table to accommodate those measurements. This way, you know you'll be sitting at an appropriate height when you sit at the dining table. You also know you'll have enough room around you to pull your chair in and out, as needed.

No-Scratch Legs

Make sure you ask the table maker how they plan to make the bottoms of the table's legs. These legs should be fitted with some sort of anti-slip device or surface. This could be felt, or it could be a piece of soft, molded plastic. Either way, you want reassurance that the table won't scrape your dining room floor if you move it.

If you're having a table custom made, make sure you take the time to look into the various features available. A waterproof finish, appropriate heights, and no-scratch leg bottoms make for a lovely table.
